Chelsea submit £69m Matthijs de Ligt bid but handed Timo Werner Juventus complication

Talks are progressing between Chelsea and Juventus for 22-year-old defender Matthijs de Ligt. The Blues are in the market for two new defenders this summer following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

De Ligt is under contract with Juventus until 2024 but is apparently open to making a move this summer, with Thomas Tuchel a big admirer of the Dutch defender.

As claimed by Chelsea reporter Simon Phillips via Rob Pratley, Chelsea have put forward a proposal of just over £60m with £9m add ons being considered. This should bring optimism to Todd Boehly who is aiming to complete several deals before the start of the USA pre-season tour this month.

However, the snag in this update pertains to initial hopes of doing a swap deal that would see a current Chelsea attacker go in the opposite direction. Phillips reports that it is likely any player in return would be a separate deal as Juventus want to attain a big fee for De Ligt.

Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic have been named as two players being discussed, however with it emerging that a separate deal would need to be done, which given what Chelsea could ask for, might halt any deal. Juventus are also reportedly close to securing the free transfer of Angel Di Maria, which puts more strain on an already bloated wage bill in Turin.
