Chelsea second half player ratings vs Charlotte: Colwill good, Kenedy lively, Sterling sharp

Edouard Mendy

The only player who kept his spot from the opening 45 minutes, Mendy was forced into action shortly after the hour mark to deny a low drive from Andrew Shinyashiki. The Senegal international should've been beaten when Shinyashiki was afforded a free header and wasn't able to stop Daniel Rios' late penalty. 6

Trevoh Chalobah

Very much the senior member of the back three, Chalobah drifted out to the right flank when Chelsea didn't have possession but didn't look uncomfortable. He always looked to play forward when on the ball and wasn't afraid to bark instructions to his teammates. Was unfortunate to give away a late penalty. 6

Levi Colwill

Tuchel stated in his pre-match press conference that he hadn't seen enough of the academy graduate, so this was an opportunity for Colwill to catch the eye in the middle of the back three. The 19-year-old looked comfortable in the Chelsea side; there was one nice pass out wide and a good recovery challenge to stop a Charlotte attack. 7

Malang Sarr

The Frenchman saw an early second-half header skew wide of the post. Defensively, Sarr produced one important interception to protect Chelsea's lead with a little more than ten minutes to play. 6

Kenedy

With his bleached blonde hair, it was impossible to miss Kenedy on the right flank. The Brazilian showed plenty of energy and showcased his technical ability with two outside-of-the-boot crosses, the second of which ended with a chance for Mason Mount. Kenedy also teed up Conor Gallagher for a chance. 7

Conor Gallagher

The England international impressed in the weekend victory over Club America in Las Vegas and again looked sharp after being introduced at the interval. He almost teed up Raheem Sterling for a finish at the back post and had a good chance to get on the scoresheet with 13 minutes to play but scuffed his effort. 6

Ethan Ampadu

After a strong 45-minute outing at centre-back in Las Vegas, Ampadu was handed a midfield role in Charlotte – it's little wonder the 21-year-old isn't sure what his favourite position is. The Wales international handled himself well in midfield and once again, his willingness and ability to play forward stood out in the second half. Did give the ball away in the build-up to Charlotte's late penalty, however. 6

Ben Chilwell

Another step on the comeback trail for the wing-back, Chilwell didn't see too much of the ball in the attacking third but was an outlet throughout. After more than six months out, the most important thing for the England international is building up his match fitness. 6

Mason Mount

Handed the captain's armband for the second half, Mount linked well with Gallagher early on and whipped a free-kick narrowly over from the edge of the box. The England international came close to getting on the scoresheet for the second game in a row but was denied by George Marks. 6

Kai Havertz

The German replaced Michy Batshuayi but was quiet during his 45 minutes on the pitch. Havertz's only standout moment was a nice clip forward with seven minutes to play that gave Sterling his only opportunity of the second half. 5

Raheem Sterling

Chelsea's marquee signing of the summer was introduced at the break and almost instantly snuck in at the back post to finish a Gallagher cross. Unfortunately, the covering Charlotte defender cleared. There were a couple of promising surges forward with the ball from Sterling as Chelsea countered and he was denied late on by a good save from Pablo Sisniega. 7
