The John Terry and Frank Lampard partnership is probably the best co-captaincy you could imagine. Chelsea was blessed to see their most successful years with Terry leading the line with Lampard right behind him. Both are amazing servants of the Chelsea badge.
As we go into a new era, new captaincy would need to be decided. It's not about how long you have played in the first team, and it's about how hard you are willing to fight for the badge. If Cesar Azpilicueta leaves this summer, Jorginho is expected to take over as captain. He has been second to the Spaniard since 2019. However, it would be nice to see one of the Cobham boys take the mantle with all due respect, maybe even two.

The future of Chelsea is now. It sounds pretty cliche, I know, but it is true. Prior to 2019, Terry was the only graduate from Cobham to solidify his position in the Chelsea first team. We now have an array of talent, Champions League winners who bleed blue. It's time to reward their loyalty with the captain's armband. I have a case for two players in particular. Reece James and Mason Mount.
The fan favourite is obviously Mount. He has stolen the hearts of the majority ever since Lampard appointed him as his main man. We were gifted with a glimpse of what he would look like as captain. During Lampard's final day as Chelsea manager, he gave Mount the Captain's armband, indicating that he was the right choice to replace Azplicueta when the time came.
Terry has already backed Mount to become captain. He insists that Chelsea should hand the captaincy to the 23-year-old to make any real 'progression'.
Whilst I agree with both Chelsea legends, I think that there is one player that should also be considered: James.
According to James' father, it has always been a dream of his to become Chelsea captain. The English right-back has been at Chelsea from a young age and has in the past been tipped to be Azpilicueta's successor. Whilst he does not look to be the socialite that Mount comes across as, he is diligent in his play and shows leadership qualities on the pitch. He comes across as a leader, and I am not the only person to believe so.
James was handed the captain's armband at the end of his loan spell at Wigan. He led the team out, and it felt so natural for the then 19-year-old. It's rather unorthodox to see a loanee captain his surrogate club.
All in all, there's a connection between the two friends, Mount and James. If one is chosen as captain, it's a no brainer to make the other the co-captain. Whichever order it goes in, I'll be more than happy to see a Cobham graduate live out his childhood dream. Both are amazing options. Chelsea will be left in good hands.
