Chelsea have often faced backlash for letting some of their talented youth players leave for a new challenge, with some going on to achieve huge things in world football. It has led to a greater effort to keep hold of some youngsters with the highest potential, offering first-team football where possible while still aiming for the top.
Reece James is just one example of this model paying off, having become a key player since breaking through under former boss Frank Lampard. football.london understands the England international is set to be offered a new contract at the club - with his current one expiring in 2025 - and the 22-year-old is expected to extend his stay.
The likes of Mason Mount and Trevoh Chalobah are also testament to the new opportunities afforded at the club, while other youth prospects are on loan looking to impress in those spells. One that has already gone through that phase of his development with the Blues is Conor Gallagher.

The energetic midfielder had his fair share of loan spells over recent seasons, though his last spell away at Crystal Palace last season is where he really took the spotlight. The 22-year-old suited Patrick Vieira's new-look Eagles, even going on to earn an England international call-up during that time.
After a season of highs, the next test to pass is back at Chelsea, though there remain some doubts over how he will fit into the side. That is a challenge he has to overcome, with his senior Blues career only in the early stages at this point.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has claimed he is a "huge fan" of Gallagher and has heaped praise on him, but the youngster may have little chance to sink or swim when playing for a club consistently aiming for the top. Should he not be involved though, there are clubs seemingly queueing for his signature.
According to the Sun, one of those is former club Crystal Palace, who have looked to move early to continue their interest in the midfielder. The report claims that should Gallagher not be within the first-team and open to a switch away from Stamford Bridge, the Eagles are readying a January bid worth over £20million.
It remains to be seen how Gallagher fits in long-term at Chelsea, given the number of injuries and the potential for further midfield additions in the future. However, he has a run of games to impress the manager and the hierarchy ahead.
