Chelsea reigniting their interest in Ajax defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez during the January transfer window is a 'possibility but not guaranteed' says Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues were in hot pursuit of the versatile Mexican during the summer transfer window but saw their £43m bid rejected by the Dutch giants.
During that period, the Eredivisie champions lost a number of key figures and faces at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Manager Erik ten Hag was appointed Manchester United manager whilst Lisandro Martinez and Antony followed the tactician to Old Trafford.

Ajax rejected Chelsea's approach due to the lack of time they would have in finding a replacement for Alvarez - who can play as a central defender as well as an option in front of the defence.
In his Caught Offside column, the reporter said: "Chelsea really like Ajax’s Edson Alvarez and they have for some time now and I know fans will want to know if the Blues will try to sign him again in January, well, it’s a possibility but not something that is guaranteed yet.
"Chelsea will have a new director’s structure; so they will decide on the priorities in November or December together with Graham Potter and Todd Boehly.
"Alvarez is appreciated and remains highly rated but there are no current talks with Ajax or his agents. It will also depend on whether or not Ajax will be open to selling, it’s not a sure thing at this point in the season."
Earlier this week, the 25-year-old opened up on his failed move to Stamford Bridge.
Although the start of the season has been a strong one for Alfred Schreuder with the reigning champions sitting top of the Dutch top flight, Alvarez admitted he was disappointed.
He said: "I am very disappointed about it [failed move to Chelsea]. But I am convinced that one day a big club will come.
"We never expected Chelsea to put in another bid at the end of August. It was a difficult situation. Ajax couldn't do anything."
