Chelsea players ratings vs Norwich: Silva class, Mount and Havertz step up, Werner frustrating

Edouard Mendy

Chelsea's goalkeeper only had a couple of routine saves to make in the opening period as Norwich struggled to keep possession and fashion chances.

He had no chance with the penalty after the interval but did make an important save to deny Kenny McLean to keep the Blues ahead. 7

Trevoh Chalobah

The academy graduate kept his place in the side and made the ideal start as he guided Mason Mount's corner beyond Tim Krul after just three minutes.

Chalobah performed well during the remainder of the first half but conceded a penalty in the second after a cross struck his arm as he attempted to clear. 7

Thiago Silva

An almost flawless performance from the Brazilian once again. Silva wasn't overly exerted as Chelsea controlled the game but was always spot on with his positioning and distribution.

One small error in the first half didn't prove costly and stepped up when needed in the second half when the Blues came under pressure. 8

Andreas Christensen

Deployed on the left of the back three with Antonio Rudiger rested, Christensen wasn't overly tested in the first half. He kept the ball moving in Chelsea's build-up and came close to scoring with a header that hit the side netting.

He did mis-time one tackle on Max Aarons in the second period and looked shakier as Norwich stepped up their performance after Teemu Pukki's penalty. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta

Chelsea's captain was back in the starting XI but lasted only 45 minutes before being replaced (almost certainly due to injury). Azpilicueta did look sharp before being taken off and showed good pace to shut down a break forward from Brandon Williams. 7

Mateo Kovacic

The Croatian continued his fine form this season with another impressive display at Carrow Road.

Kovacic came close in the opening period with a half volley which went narrowly wide and there was one sumptuous long pass that got Mason Mount in on goal. 8

Jorginho

This was the Italian's third consecutive start but he hasn't yet been able to recapture the form that made him a standout performer for Chelsea in 2021. Jorginho was sluggish out of possession and forced into committing fouls to stop Norwich attacks.

His passing was tidy but never truly progressed Chelsea up the pitch. 6

Saul Niguez

Saul continued at left wing-back with Marcos Alonso not fit to start after his bout of Covid and was steady if not spectacular. He got forward well in support of Timo Werner and wasn't caught out defensively. 6

Mason Mount

After a quiet few weeks, Mount was back to his best at Carrow Road. He delivered a fine corner for Chalobah's opener and then finished superbly after being teed up by Kai Havertz.

Mount came close to a second after the break and covered a huge amount of ground throughout, especially in the second period, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek drafted in at right wing-back. 8

Kai Havertz

Very much Chelsea's first-choice number nine – ahead of Romelu Lukaku – and Havertz showcased why in the opening period as he linked play expertly and carved open the Norwich defence for Mount's goal.

However, the German's influence faded after the break as Norwich attempted a fightback but he did show several nice touches to hold the ball up and, importantly, fired home late on to seal the points for the Blues. 8

Timo Werner

This was the German forward's first start in the Premier League in 89 days. He needed to produce a performance on the left of the front three.

Unfortunately for Werner, he was the quietest of the Chelsea forwards. There were a couple of darts into the penalty area and a header over, but not enough to force himself back up the attacking pecking order. 5

Chelsea substitutes

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (for Cesar Azpilicueta, 45)

Brought on at right wing-back, Loftus-Cheek didn't offer the same presence down Chelsea's right flank and was caught out of position defensively. But then he is a midfielder by trade. 5

Romelu Lukaku (for Timo Werner, 84)

Introduced late on and almost got on the scoresheet. N/A

N'Golo Kante (for Mateo Kovacic,. 84)

Brought on to help Chelsea see out the game. Did that as he teed up Havertz's late goal. N/A
