Chelsea player ratings as Ben Chilwell left frustrated as Cucurella error costs vs Aston Villa

Kepa Arrizabalaga - The Spanish goalkeeper did not see too many shots on target but was caught stranded when Marc Cucurella's header allowed Ollie Watkins in. 5.

Reece James - The defender produced an exquisite early crossfield pass to Ben Chilwell at the start of the game and put in some timely tackles on the right side of a back three. 6.

Kalidou Koulibaly - Didn't look secure at the centre of Chelsea's backline and was caught going to win the ball to see Cucurella head it back towards Kepa ahead of him. Did well in some one-to-one battles and produced a great last ditch tackle on Jacob Ramsey in the opening period. 5.

Marc Cucurella - Looked to be combatitive once again in the back three but his weak header that let in Watkins is by far the standout moment of his performance. 4.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek - A consistent presence down the right flank as Chelsea looked to exploit the wings and was steady during his time on the pitch. 6.

Mateo Kovacic - The Croatian certainly did not have his shooting boots at hand on Saturday evening and had a collection of wayward strikes. Showed some good composure on the ball as usual but there's an argument that he and Enzo Fernandez could have offered more protection at times. 5.

Enzo Fernandez - Like James, consistently showed his repertoire of passing when looking to find his teammates on the flanks. Produced what Chelsea have come to expect for the most part. 6.

Ben Chilwell - The wingback was determined to get free down the left flank and persistently made the run and called for the ball. Connected with both Fernandez and James and was Chelsea's most dangerous player time and again. Saw a header ruled out for a push. 7.

Mykhailo Mudryk - Showed his electric acceleration to dispossess Boubacar Kamara and get a shot away but perhaps should have squared it and later broke free of the Villa backline to produce a weak effort. Showed hints of the threat he could pose but still trying to click in the Chelsea forward line. 5.

Joao Felix - Not his finest outing in a Chelsea shirt as he joined a collection of Blues players unable to pose enough threat against the Villans. Some impressive moments on the ball but Chelsea simply need a goal. 5.

Kai Havertz - Would have hoped to better with some of display in the box though did threaten some good connections around it. Continued to look more comfortable not being the lead man of the front three. 5.

Substitutes:

N'Golo Kante - Little could be expected of the Frenchman with Chelsea 2-0 down but the introduction of the Frenchman brough respite from frustration and some cheers as he entered the field for the first time under Graham Potter. The midfielder had a great opportunity to score but could only darg his shot wide. Took the captain's armband from Kovacic late in the second period. Good signs that he could be everywhere once again. 6.

Noni Madueke - Slotted onto the right flank in place of Loftus-Cheek and saw a 63rd minute effort go wide as he cut in on his left foot. Produced some lively moments as the Blues tried to fashion opportunities to come back.

Conor Gallagher - Made little impact during his short time on the pitch. 5.

Christian Pulisic - Had few opportunities after he came on late. 5.
