Chelsea offer Mason Mount update as Mauricio Pochettino deal edges closer to announcement

Chelsea have provided an update on Mason Mount's recovery as fans await Mauricio Pochettino's announcement as manager. The 24-year-old has suffered with plenty of injuries this season, with an ongoing pelvic issue plaguing him this season.

Mount had surgery to fix a long-term injury problem with caretaker manager Frank Lampard admitting it was unlikely that the English midfielder would feature again for the Blues this term. Chelsea have just three Premier League fixtures left to play this season with back-to-back games in Manchester against Man City and Man United.

The West Londoners are set to take on Newcastle at Stamford Bridge in their final game of the season with Mauricio Pochettino expected to be confirmed as the new head coach before the 2023/24 campaign. football.london reported last week that Chelsea have agreed a deal to appoint the Argentine as manager, despite a contract not being signed yet.

Pochettino is said to be determined to keep Mount at Stamford Bridge next season with Liverpool and Arsenal both keen on taking advantage of the 24-year-old's contract situation. The England international has rejected numerous approaches from the Blues over extending his deal.

The two parties were some way off in what they believed was a suitable contract offer, casting serious question marks over Mount's future at Stamford Bridge. If it gets to the summer and nothing is resolved, football.london understands Chelsea would want something in the region of £70million for the midfielder's services.

Mount's future may remain uncertain but he is on track to return to action before the end of the season. The 24-year-old returned to training on the grass this week following successful surgery on a pelvic issue.

The English playmaker has not yet returned to first team training but is said to be targeting the Premier League clash against United at Old Trafford, as per reports. Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Mateo Kovacic could all be sidelined for the remainder of the season after suffering injury issues in recent weeks.
