Chelsea news: Graham Potter sends Champions League warning as Cristiano Ronaldo move offered

Chelsea sealed their place in the Champions League knockout stages and are likely to do so as group winners following their impressive 2-1 away win over Red Bull Salzburg.

Goals from Matteo Kovacic and a wonderstrike from Kai Havertz either side of Junior Adamu's equaliser were enough to hand the Blues all three points and keep Graham Potter's unbeaten run as Chelsea boss in tact.

The former Brighton manager has taken to life at Stamford Bridge seamlessly and is yet to experience what defeat tastes like while in charge of the west London giants.

Next up is a return to the south coast for Potter as he prepares to face off with former side Brighton for the first time since he left the Amex in favour of the bright lights of the Bridge.

Mirror Football has analyed the main Chelsea headlines on Wednesday, October 26.

The Chelsea manager reminded his players that despite booking their place in the knockout stages of European football's most elite club competition: “It will not be a straight road.”

Potter has overseen a very impressive start in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat and he added: "We’ve had a lot of games and a little bit of disruption in terms of some key players missing, but credit to the boys they’ve responded really well.

“They’ve picked up points in the Premier League and to go through as we have in the Champions League is a fantastic effort from everybody. It will not be a straight road, unfortunately. But we are taking steps in the right direction and I think tonight was one.

"I can’t comment on (the finishing) before I was here. All I can say is it’s good that we create chances and perform well. Then you back the quality of the players - the more chances we create, then the quality will come through. So it’s not too much of a concern."

Chelsea's latest appointment

The Blues are on the cusp of announcing their new technical director – former Red Bull Leipzig director Christopher Vivell.

A report from The Guardian explains that Todd Boehly wants a five-man team keeping tabs on things.

Joe Shields will become co-director of recruitment, while Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are also on the verge of a move to Stamford Bridge. The final member of the five-man recruitment team is Kyle Macaulay, who has already been appointed by the Blues.

Vivell is the headline appointment, having worked his way up through the Hoffenheim ranks before joining Red Bull Salzburg.

With Vivell overseeing proceedings, Salzburg signed the likes of Patson Daka, the recently-retired Enock Mwepu and most notably Erling Haaland. The Chelsea faithful can harbour plenty of hope he can scout similar talent to bolster the Blues chances of success.

Blues offered Ronaldo

Chelsea are one of three Premier League clubs that have reportedly been offered Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United consider offloading the wantaway 37-year-old.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was suspended for United’s last league outing at Stamford Bridge after storming down the Old Trafford tunnel following his refusal to come off the bench late on in the win over Tottenham.

According to a report from the Sun, sources close to Ronaldo claim the forward's advisors have sounded out Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Newcastle and Arsenal. The Blues have been touted with a move for the former Real Madrid for months, but former boss Thomas Tuchel was firmly against the idea.

Some claim that is one of the reasons the German coach lost his job, but it remains to be seen whether Potter is any more keen on the idea of signing the struggling 37-year-old.
