Chelsea news: Graham Potter era begins as Todd Boehly's all-star match provokes backlash

Chelsea have begun their new era under Graham Potter as the new Blues boss began his tenure with a frustrating 1-1 draw at home against Red Bull Salzburg.

Having replaced Thomas Tuchel in the dugout less than a week ago after Chelsea began their Champions League campaign with a shock 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb.

Fast forward to Wednesday and Raheem Sterling gave the Blues the lead three minutes into the second half to build on an encouraging first 45 minutes. But a late equaliser from Salzburg substitute Noah Okafor earned a point for the Austrian visitors, leaving Chelsea on just one point from their opening two games.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from Stamford Bridge.

Potter makes Blues vow

Graham Potter may have been frustrated with Chelsea dropping points against Red Bull Salzburg but he had plenty of encouragement from what he saw of the home team’s showing.

Potter was pleased with his new team's performance, as the English tactician told BT Sport : "We're disappointed with the result. I thought the boys gave everything. We scored a good goal but lost a bit in the second half but their goalkeeper has made some good saves.

"It is what it is, we have to dust ourselves down. Personality and application was good, we will get better. We got Raheem in one-on-one situations quite often and the goal was a good result of that. It's always irritating when you concede a goal. Overall the defensive performance was quite good, it's just the little details we will have to improve.

"It has not been easy for the boys, they have responded to us really well over the last few days and it's a point we will have to take and get better. The attitude has been fantastic, no complaints apart from the fact we haven't taken three points. We'll get better."

Three Potter changes

Having been appointed as the new Blues boss less than a week ago, it was never going to be easy for Potter to impose his ideas on his new team.

Indeed, his appointment was always likely to signal evolution rather than revolution – but there were still some changes and fresh ideas that were evident against Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday evening.

It was an evening which there was plenty to be learned of Potter’s Chelsea, with back-to-back league postponements giving him more time to implement his ideas to his new players in training sessions.

Boehly’s all-star idea shot down

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly's idea for an All-Star game has received somewhat of a backlash, including from the Professional Footballers' Association.

Boehly suggested on Tuesday that players from all clubs could come together to play in two regional sides, as they do in several US sports, with the money potentially going to help clubs further down the pyramid.

Yet the PFA poured cold water on the idea due to a lack of available time for matches, following strong criticism from pundits such as Gary Neville along with Graeme Souness criticising the thought process behind the suggestion.
