Newcastle director Amanda Staveley has revealed the club’s investors did not move for Chelsea, Tottenham or Liverpool as they did not want to spend billions.
Staveley forms part of the PCP Capital Partners who, along with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and RB Sports and Media, purchased the club from Mike Ashley in October 2021.
Chelsea were put up for sale a few months later following sanctions to former owner Roman Abramovich, while there are growing reports suggesting Spurs could soon change hands.
While Chelsea are now firmly into the Boehly-Clearlake Capital era, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is understood to have held conversations with a number of interested parties.
Liverpool’s owners have also confirmed they are looking for investment and Staveley has previously been linked with a takeover at Anfield, albeit before arriving at Newcastle.
Still, Newcastle – who were sold for an estimated £305m – represented a much more prudent investment.
“We didn’t go for the wonderful Tottenham, Chelsea or Liverpool” because “why spend billions,” Staveley told FT’s Business of Football summit.
