Chelsea investigate alleged racist abuse of Tottenham star Son Heung-min at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are investigating a possible instance of racist abuse directed at Tottenham’s Son Heung-min during Sunday’s match at Stamford Bridge.

Footage that emerged on social media after the 2-2 draw appeared to show a supporter in a corner of the Shed End making a racist gesture at the South Korean. The Metropolitan Police are also understood to be looking into the alleged incident, while Spurs are aware of the situation.

An official club statement from Chelsea read; “Chelsea Football Club finds any form of discriminatory behaviour totally abhorrent. It has no place at Chelsea or in any of our communities.

“Chelsea FC has consistently made its zero tolerance position on discriminatory behaviour very clear, yet there are still idiots like this that attach themselves to this club as so called ‘fans’, which shames Chelsea FC, our coaches, players, staff and our true supporters.

“We are investigating this incident and, if identified, this individual will face the strongest action from the club.”

Manchester United suspended three season-ticket holders after Son received online abuse following Spurs’ 3-1 defeat by the Red Devils in April 2021, while in 2019 a West Ham fan was fined for racially abusing Son during a cup tie.

Last month, Son revealed he had suffered racist abuse when he moved to Germany from Korea as a teenager and said he enjoyed taking revenge by knocking the defending champions out of the 2018 World Cup.

“I moved to Germany when I was young and went through so many difficult moments,” Son said at an event in Seoul. “I faced a lot of racism. And while going through such a really difficult time, I had a lot of thoughts on my mind I should get my revenge one day.

“When people cry, I’d (usually) want to comfort them,” added Son, whose winner for South Korea ensured Germany finished bottom of their World Cup group in Russia, leaving many fans in tears. “But watching German people cry, (I felt) I was able to take revenge!”

Meanwhile, Chelsea and Spurs have until the end of today to respond after Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte were charged with improper conduct by the FA for clashing after the final whistle on Sunday.
