Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount could provide his side a boost as he targets a return from injury in time for the Carabao Cup final clash with Liverpool.
Mount was forced off during the FA Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle with an ankle injury, but returned to action for Chelsea's trip to Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup.
However, he suffered another injury during Chelsea's win over Palmeiras after extra time in the FIFA Club World Cup final last weekend, and was expected to miss at least two weeks of action.
He was replaced by Christian Pulisic in the first half as a late Kai Havertz penalty in extra time secured the Blues their first Club World Cup trophy.
The Athletic first reported the extent of the 23-year-old's injury, stating that while the diagnosis is better than first feared, the player is likely to miss a crucial run of games.
A meeting with Crystal Palace in the Premier League and the visit of Lille in the Champions League are expected to come too soon for Mount while the Carabao Cup final is set to be touch and go.
However, a fresh report from The Telegraph indicates that the player is targeting a return in time for the Wembley showpiece his goal.
While it may remain unlikely that he will be 100% ready to take on Jurgen Klopp's men in north west London, Mount is determined to do everything he can to return in time.
The Carabao Cup would be the fourth trophy won by Mount as a first-team Chelsea player, adding to the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.
