Chelsea handed injury boost for Newcastle clash in new double update

Liam Rosenior has delivered a new injury update on Chelsea duo Estevao and Jamie Gittens.

At his press conference on Friday held ahead of Saturday’s match at home to Newcastle in the Premier League, Rosenior confirmed that Estevao is still sidelined with a hamstring issue that has ruled him out since the FA Cup win over Hull last month.

The Brazilian winger will be assessed again ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League last-16 second-leg tie at home to Paris Saint-Germain, with Chelsea facing a daunting task to reach the quarter-finals as they attempt to overturn a 5-2 deficit.

Rosenior had initially described the problem as an “awareness in his hamstring”, but the injury has since ended up being slightly more serious. Estevao has been doing individualised training at Cobham.

There is better news on Gittens, who is available for selection again after recovering from a hamstring tear sustained against West Ham on January 31.

"Jamie is back involved,” Chelsea boss Rosenior said on Friday. “Este [Estevao] is still a little bit further away.

“We want to be careful with Este's hamstring injury because we don't want it reoccuring. We'll see he how is for Tuesday's game against PSG.”

Chelsea’s only other injury absentee at present is Levi Colwill, who has not featured at all this term after suffering a serious knee injury in the first training session of pre-season in the summer.

However, the defender was back in training ahead of the heavy first-leg loss to PSG as he continues to work towards a comeback at some point this season.
