Graham Potter had to switch from a back five to a back four against Manchester United to give Chelsea more solidity in midfield. Without N'Golo Kante or a fit Mateo Kovacic the Blues saw Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek overran.
It's a constant issue for Chelsea managers, how best to not only make up for the lack of midfield presence in front of the defence but also how to do it efficiently. Graham Potter saw that issue and responded by adding another body to the centre of the pitch. Not only to stop the overrunning, but because between Kovacic, Jorginho and Loftus-Cheek they could provide safety in numbers.
Chelsea's players in the current group are not able to defend on their own due to long-term neglect of the defensive midfield position and Potter is simply the next in a line of managers to realise such a fact. The wait should be coming to an end though.
