Chelsea fans are all saying the same thing after AFC Richmond result in Ted Lasso

Chelsea were held to a draw in typical style in a new fixture added the calendar as Ted Lasso's third season saw episode two involve a trip to Stamford Bridge. The hit American comedy based around the rise of AFC Richmond starting gracing the screens on Apple TV last week with the fictional season opener shown on Wednesday.

Just days after the real Chelsea drew 2-2 to Everton at Stamford Bridge, the TV version were scripted to fall foul to the same fate against Lasso's plucky side with the game finishing 1-1. During the early period of the international break this was met with widespread hysteria from fans.

The Blues' social media team played along with the gimmick too, sending out fresh quotes in press conference and pre-match interview style from Graham Potter and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. It plays into the hands of Lasso and Richmond, who run a realistic social media plan alongside the show.

Although Potter wasn't in the dugout for the game, one that finished 1-1, fans were quick to jump on parts of the episode that felt eerily similar to the current state of things in the Premier League. "Chelsea drew AFC Richmond 1-1 in their game in the series and their owner or is it manager said "Obviously not the results we were hoping for today." Gave me some Graham Potter vibes," one supporter wrote on Twitter.

Chelsea went ahead before the break only for them to be pegged back and held to a point at home. In other slapstick comments, one fan went as far as to criticise the substitutions made, mocking Potter by writing: "30’ Chelsea 1-0 Richmond : Gallagher In, Loftus-Cheek In, Felix Out, Pulisic Out."

Others made the same point that not being able to beat minnows Richmond is perfectly on brand for Chelsea this season as they struggle down in tenth place in the actual league table. In reality, the Blues won 1-0 on the opening day of the season away to Everton.

While there has been backlash against the club and Todd Boehly for the comedic role in all of this, the deal signed off with Ted Lasso for season two stretches back to 2021, well over one year before the owner took charge. Now into its third season there is no indication of the role that may or may not have been played by the American owner in the club's participation.
