Chelsea 'exploring' signing of Mason Mount replacement who Zinedine Zidane loves

Chelsea are 'exploring the signing' of Lyon and France Under-21s international playmaker Rayan Cherki, according to reports.

The Blues are experiencing another overhaul of the playing squad this summer ahead of Mauricio Pochettino's first season with the club. Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson have already been signed while a host of regular senior players have left such as N'Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, Kai Havertz and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

A new attacking playmaker is one position that will require attention in the coming weeks. Mason Mount is on the verge of completing a £60million move to Manchester United after the two sides agreed on a deal, football.london understands.

Mount has been a mainstay in Chelsea's side since he broke into the first team under Frank Lampard in 2019. The 24-year-old has made 195 appearances for the west London outfit, scoring 33 and assisting 37.

With continued uncertainty over his contract situation, Mount's imminent exit leaves the door open for a new face next season. Cherki, 19, has left a lasting impression with his performances at the Under-21s European Championship, helping France reach the quarter-finals - where they will face Mykhailo Mudryk's Ukraine on Sunday.

According to Simon Phillips, Chelsea are exploring the possibility of signing Cherki this summer. The Lyon star is one of three players on Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley's summer shopping list, alongside Celta Vigo's Gabri Veiga and Bayer Leverkusen Florian Wirtz.

Lyon's recent struggles to secure European qualification has left Cherki as one of the club's most in-demand players. This summer, it's said his sale would generate Les Gones' some much-needed cash.

Cherki has been linked with a big-money move since breaking into Lyon's senior team. Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane wanted to bring him to Spain a few years back, but the La Liga giants could not agree on a deal with Lyon.

It's unclear how much the playmaker would cost. However, his performances this summer will drive his price tag upwards amid strong interest from Europe.
