Chelsea striker Armando Broja will not play again this season after suffering a serious knee injury.
Surgery will be required on the Albanian’s anterior cruciate ligament following a scan.
Broja was taken off on a stretcher in the friendly defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday after an awkward challenge with Ezri Konsa.
Standard Sport reported yesterday that the 21-year-old was set to sit out the remainder of the season, which has now been confirmed by Chelsea.
A statement releasd on Wednesday read: “Having sustained a knee injury during the first half of Sunday’s friendly against Aston Villa, Armando underwent further assessment following the club’s return to England.
“Scan results from those assessments have unfortunately confirmed an anterior cruciate ligament rupture and that surgery will be required.
“Following the operation, Armando will work closely with the club’s medical department during his rehabilitation and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.”
Chelsea may be pushed into the January transfer market as a result of Broja’s absence, with Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku among those said to be of interest.
