Chelsea Club World Cup prize money revealed after extra-time win over Palmeiras

Thomas Tuchel has won his third major honour as Chelsea's head coach after the Blues secured an extra-time victory over Palmeiras on Saturday.

Chelsea have become world champions for the first-time in their history as a result of a late 117th minute goal from Kai Havertz.

Romelu Lukaku had put the European champions in front ten minutes into the second half but Palmeiras levelled from the spot after a Thiago Silva handball., Raphael Veiga converting calmly.

On an evening of average quality at Mohammed Bin Zayed stadium, the game seemed destined for a shootout but then Cesar Azpilicueta’s shot with four minutes to go was handled by Luan and after a lengthy VAR check, Australian referee Chris Beath pointed to the spot.

Havertz stuttered on his run up but Weverton, the Palmeiras goalkeeper, chose the wrong way.

Winning the competition means that Chelsea have now won three major honours under Tuchel, following on from their successes in the Champions League and European Super Cup last year.

But a trophy isn't the only thing the Blues collected on Saturday. Victory in the tournament means that Chelsea were awarded a kind prize fee of five million dollars (£3.68m), as per The Sporting News.

Palmeiras took home four million dollars (£2.94m) as a small consolation for finishing runners up, but the silverware is all that mattered to the Blues.

They will now turn their attention to domestic football for a Premier League clash with crystal Palace as they look to solidify their place in next season's Champions League by finishing in the top four.
