Chelsea can repeat Eden Hazard transfer trick to inflict double £45m Arsenal and Liverpool blow

Chelsea are apparently once again aiming to add to their attacking options having reportedly submitted an enquiry for Lille striker Jonathan David.

According to Canadian outlet TSN, the reigning European champions have requested more information from his current employers regarding his future and a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Whilst a switch is not thought to be in the offing immediately, Chelsea are potentially considering a transfer in the future in an effort to fight off interest from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona.

His agent, Nick Mavromas, has already suggested that David - valued at £45m by transfermarkt - will leave the Ligue 1 club in the summer, giving plenty of encouragement to Chelsea.

Speaking last month, he said: "For us, the goal is to finish the season in Lille, but it will be his last season there for several reasons.

"I think the Premier League is a good option for him. I think that he likes Spain a lot also because he likes the feeling of the ball and the very technical players.

"These two leagues are a big priority for him, but nothing is excluded."

Should Chelsea complete a deal, it would hark back to their signing of club icon Eden Hazard back in 2012.

A French champion, Hazard was fresh off the back of a stunning 22-goal season for Les Dogues before eventually making the £32m switch to Stamford Bridge. That campaign was by and far and away his best for Lille - having only netted 12 in all competitions as they claimed the Ligue 1 trophy the season before.

David is in an intriguingly similar situation. Whilst proving pivotal to his side winning the French title last term, he hit just 13 goals and has already surpassed those numbers this season with 16 to his name already with over half of the season left to play.

It is fair to say then that Chelsea would be signing a player on an upwardly mobile trajectory.

Not only that but if the Blues do secure his signature, they would be inflicting a major transfer blow on two of their Premier League rivals.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool have been strongly linked with David in the past as they each attempt to bolster their attacking options.

Whilst it would be expected each of the Gunners and the Reds would quickly move onto alternative targets, the fact that a player of David’s quality would be at Stamford Bridge instead of the Emirates Stadium or Anfield would only benefit the Blues as they attempt to seal European places - and eventually titles - at their rivals expense.

Chelsea are set to receive a close look at David in February as the Blues do battle with his side Lille in the Champions League round of 16.
