Chelsea and Manchester United could be set to face non-league side Wrexham this summer as part of a pre-season friendly. It comes amid the rapid exposure to the public eye for the Welsh outfit since their high-profile takeover in recent years.
Wrexham were bought by movie star Ryan Reynolds alongside television celebrity Rob McElhenney in November 2020 in a move that shocked many. The Red Dragons are one of the oldest football clubs in the pyramid, but their steady decline over the years saw them drop out of the football league and come close to going out of business entirely.
The new owners have famously recorded a series on their time since taking over the club, which has seen plenty of money invested off the pitch as well as on it. The side missed out narrowly on promotion as they lost in last season's playoffs, with this campaign seeing them sit second in a heated automatic promotion race with Notts County.

While they are still establishing themselves in the public eye, the growth of the club in the USA could be key and it appears as though a pre-season tour of the nation is in the works. Amid rumours of games against some of the Premier League elite in the summer, a club statement has been made: "The club can confirm that our previously publicised plans to tour the US during pre-season are at an advanced stage, but are not as yet finalised. Full details of the games the club will play in and where, will be released across the club’s communication channels when they are confirmed. We would advise fans against making any arrangements to travel to the games based on speculation, to avoid disappointment."
While it is still early stages, there could be two huge clashes on the horizon for the tour that may include two giants of the Premier League. The Telegraph reports that both Chelsea and Manchester United could be involved in pre-season friendlies with the side in what could be a major coup for the Welsh side.
There will be hopes that if it means the Blues are heading back to the USA for their pre-season training then it will be better organised than last year. Thomas Tuchel was unhappy with how things were planned and that was only backed up by recent statements from Graham Potter, who said: "There was a sub-optimal pre-season – and speaking to a few of the experienced guys, they thought it was the worst pre-season they've had for different reasons. That isn't to blame anybody for the reasons. It's just that it happened."
