Chef shares freezer tip that makes butter last up to a year - and it won't ruin taste

As the prices of essential food items continue to soar, many of us are looking for ways to cut costs.

Whether it is scouting for bargains or stocking up when prices are low, there are savings to be had.

And one of the worst products for skyrocketing prices is butter - with tubs costing as much as £7 spotted in supermarkets in recent months.

Thankfully, there is a possible solution - as savvy shoppers can buy now to use later when they spot a good deal, plus save any leftovers.

Although not known by everyone, butter is safe to freeze, and it can last up to a year when stored properly, as confirmed by a top chef.

Speaking to the Mirror, Anna Williams - Head Pastry Chef at award-winning Fallow Restaurant - shared how best to freeze butter.

After explaining that it is "100 per cent" possible to keep butter in the freezer safely, she said there is a best way to store it.

Anna said: "The main thing, like with most things that go in the freezer, is making sure it is covered - using either the paper that it comes in or greaseproof paper, and then an airtight container, is the best way."

What's more, she revealed the storage option will not alter the taste or texture, as the butter comes out "as good as it went in."

Depending on the type of butter, some varieties can even last up to a year in the freezer, when stored correctly.

"Generally speaking unsalted is pretty good for four to six months," Anna said. "S alted can last a little bit longer - up to a year - because its got salt in it, so it helps to preserve it a bit better."

She added that it is simple to defrost too.

" If you need it quite fast, you can defrost it in the microwave, using ten second intervals", although "the best method is defrosting it in the fridge", when time allows, according to the chef.

Her top tip: if you aren't planning to use a large amount of butter each time, cube it before freezing, then simply use as needed.
