Chef killed after Russia attacks ship in Black Sea – what we know

  • An Egyptian chef was killed and a Turkish dry cargo vessel, the Victress, caught fire during a series of Russian attacks on foreign cargo ships in the Black Sea , according to the Ukrainian navy.
  • The 58-year-old chef was aboard the Panamanian-flagged Victress, from which eight other crew members, including Turkish and Indian citizens, were successfully evacuated in a Ukrainian rescue operation.
  • Two additional vessels, flying the Belize and Palau flags, also came under fire in the Black Sea but managed to complete their respective journeys.
  • These Russian attacks on shipping followed Ukrainian forces striking energy and military infrastructure on either side of a crucial bridge connecting occupied Crimea and Russia .
  • In response to the Ukrainian strikes, the Russia-appointed Crimean governor, Sergei Aksyonov, restricted public fuel sales across the peninsula, while Russian authorities reported at least five fatalities, 28 injuries, and the downing of 239 Ukrainian drones overnight.
