An award-winning Welsh chef who heads up sustainably-driven and organic Carmarthen restaurant, The Warren, is opening a community canteen that will serve up plant-based food on a 'pay what you can' basis.
Deri Reed, who won Chef of the Year at the Food Made Food awards in 2019, will open Cegin Hedyn - which means 'seed kitchen' in Welsh - a community kitchen and canteen, at the formerly known Cellar Cafe in Camarthen at The Lammas Street Centre on Saturday, October 22. You can read our review of The Warren, which is the best restaurant in Carmarthen according to Tripadvisor, here.
Cegin Hedyn is a passion project of the chef and has been co-founded with printmaker, graphic designer and illustrator Frank Duffy, as noted on the kitchen's Instagram. The community kitchen has been made possible through the donation of the space in the Lammas Street Center, fundraising and donations from community members, be that financial or via produce, goods and services for Cegin Hedyn. On its opening day, the kitchen will be ready for hungry punters between 12 and 2pm. Its opening times will be reviewed and extended once it is more established.

Taking to Instagram, Deri posted a message which revealed what people can expect of Cegin Hedyn. "I am so excited, pleased, relieved & happy to announce the opening date for The Cegin Hedyn Community Canteen. On Saturday 22nd October 2022 will see our doors open to the public for the first time.
"We will be serving a plant based, pay what you can, canteen style lunch using ingredients from local farms & small growers, suppliers & surplus food charities such as Fare Share. We will be extending our opening times very shortly when we have settled into our new home at The Lammas Street Centre. Big thank you to all the sponsors, donors & volunteers for supporting this project so close to my heart! I can't wait to see this beautiful space come back to life! Deri Reed x"
This social enterprise project will be led by Deri and a core team offering volunteer opportunities to those wanting to get involved. The 'pay what you can' service will mean those not in a position to pay for the service at that time will not be required to, with "no questions asked".
Serving up organic, local, seasonal, nutritious and delicious food, much like his award-winning restaurant The Warren, the community kitchen will be a place "where ANYONE can come and will be able to get a nourishing, tasty, nutritious and healthy meal, no matter what".
Cegin Hedyn will open at the Lammas Street Centre in Carmarthen on Saturday, October 22. For more information, visit the website or to donate, see here.
