Hic hic hooray! Scientists have come up with a beer that’s actually good for your tummy.
Lab experts poured the world’s first pint of Probiotic Raspberry Sour in Singapore earlier this week.
The gut-friendly sour beer, which has an ABV of 4.5%, contains healthy probiotic bacteria to help digest food and keep the intestines in good working order.
The beer needs to be stored at under 5C to keep the probiotics alive. But at almost £8 a pint, it doesn’t come cheap.
Scientists at the National University of Singapore developed the fermentation method for the beer, which is being made by microbrewery Brewerkz..
But Probicient – the food technology firm behind the product – is keen to expand its range and go global.
Company boss Claire Huang said: “We are open to collaboration and interested parties who would be keen to bring the beer technology to the UK.”
The Campaign for Real Ale said it would “welcome any new innnovation that widens consumer choice”.
But Tom Stainer, Camra chief executive, added: “Locally made cask conditioned beer is one of the healthier alcoholic drinks you can choose.”
Probiotics can also be found in fermented dairy products such as yoghurt and food supplements.
