Gardai carried out a checkpoint at the scene where an unarmed and uniformed officer was brutally attacked one week ago.
Garda Padraig Scott was doused in petrol and threatened with a gun on the N16 in Loughan, Co Cavan in the early hours of February 28.
Officers say they continue to investigate all of the circumstances of the assault and launched a fresh appeal for information on Monday.
Garda Scott, who has played intercounty football for his native Roscommon, was beaten around the head in the attack close to Loughan House open prison at Blacklion.
He was so disorientated he could not tell colleagues where he was when he raised the alarm. Instead, they used a special tracing facility on his Garda computer to find him down an isolated roadway.
He suffered from concussion after the attack — the second time he has been assaulted on duty in just a year.
Some 12 months earlier, Garda Scott, 29, was badly assaulted when he arrested a suspected drink driver while he was on lone patrol in Cavan.
He was taken to hospital in Sligo but has since been discharged and is recovering off home. He remains off duty, recovering from his injuries and is being supported by his family, friends and colleagues.
Gardai now suspect the attackers who subjected him to the nightmare ordeal may have doused him in accelerant to try to remove their DNA from him after the initial attack.
He went to challenge the occupants after they drive down a small roadway, but they then turned on him and threatened him with a handgun.
The thugs then beat Garda Scott repeatedly around the head before dousing him in petrol and escaping.
Last night, one week on from the savage assault, gardai carried out a checkpoint at the scene of this attack.
Chief Superintendent Alan McGovern said: "Padraig is a uniform unarmed member of An Garda Siochana. He commenced duty as normal on Sunday, February 27, 2022.
“He was a diligent member of An Garda Siochana going about his normal duties keeping people safe but as a result of a cowardly attack by unknown criminals he did not finish duty as normal that night.
“Padraig was hospitalised and remains off duty recovering from his injuries and the trauma of this attack.”
Appealing for further information Chief Superintendent McGovern continued: "The investigation team continue to make progress in this investigation and I want to thank the public for their support and the assistance received to date.
“I continue to appeal for any person with any information on this attack to contact investigating gardai.
“Any member of the public can contact the investigation team at Cavan Garda station or can provide information through the Garda Confidential Phone Number 1800 666 111. Any information received will be treated with the strictest confidence.”
Gardai are in particular appealing to any person driving on the N16, Cavan, passing Loughan House Prison, or the R206 and R207 at their junction with the N16, between 7pm Sunday, February 27, 2022 and 3am Monday, February 28, 2022, and anyone with video footage (dashcam or other format) to contact investigating them.
