Meanwhile, a service station owner in Northern Ireland said that he expects the price of fuel to soar beyond the £2 mark in the coming days.
Terry Hughes, who owns a filling station in the border area of Belleek, Co Fermanagh, said the soaring prices were proving "relentless"
He said:“Coming from a fuel retailer it will probably not be believed but there are no fuel retailers out there making a killing at the minute - none of them.
“The price of fuel should technically be £2 per litre but every retailer is taking a hiding just to be seen not to be the first one at that price.
“It’s already at that price - it’s just that nobody wants to take that bit of margin but that’s where we are at."
The Consumer Council in Northern Ireland, which is encouraging people to use public transport where possible, also has advised customers on they can save money.
Tips on saving fuel from the Consumer Council:
- Keep your tyres inflated - reduce the drag
- Declutter your car - Less weight means less fuel
- Don’t fill your car up – fuel is heavy
- Brake and accelerate less – they burn fuel
- Avoid stopping and starting where possible – roll up slowly
