Cheap laundry product gets rid of moss and algae from paving, Mrs Hinch fans say

A common and cheap laundry product gets rid of moss and algae from patios and driveways, cleaning fans say. Many people say a green tinge develops in paved areas outside their homes during the cold and wet winter months as algae, lichens and moss develop.

This growth can be unsightly and also dangerous, as it can be slimy and slippery to walk on. When it comes to getting rid of this moss and algae, some homeowners might use a pressure washer or expensive chemicals.

However, fans of cleaning expert and social media influencer Sophie Hinchliffe - known online as Mrs Hinch - have found another solution. They said it is not only effective, but cheap - and it's easy, too, with no scrubbing required.

In a Facebook group set up for Mrs Hinch fans to exchange cleaning tips and hacks, a user named Yaz Elizabeth sought advice about tackling the problem, reported The Express. She posted: "We moved recently and have noticed our back garden where the slabs are keep going green almost like mould?

"We jet-washed it a week or two ago but it's back again. Does anyone know what is causing this? Or if there's anything I can use to stop it coming back? It also does seem to stain."

In reply, she received many suggestions of products she could try, including Patio Magic, Jeyes Fluid, Wet & Forget and even white vinegar or bleach. However, a common laundry item - washing powder - was a popular suggestion.

Gill commented: "I sprinkle Aldi biological washing powder on my patio and driveway when we get green moss. The washing powder kills the moss. Just sprinkle, you don't need to scrub. It looks like snow!"

She added: "We get a lot on the drive, as it's in the shade. My neighbour asked me about it. I did the same and it got rid of his moss too."

Tracey wrote: “Sprinkle Daz washing powder on it and then leave for the rain to wash off or hose it. Joelle Scannell agreed: "I’ve been told Daz also. I haven't tried it but a lady I know swears by it."
