Cheap flights cannot continue 'while the planet is burning', says Green Party MEP

A Green Party MEP believes cheap flights cannot continue 'while the planet is burning'.

People can decide to take a last-minute trip away after finding some cheap flights onlin or base their summer holidays around the most affordable destinations.

But as the global environmental crisis worsens, inexpensive flights may become a thing of the past.

And Green Party MEP Ciaran Cuffe has said "10 euro flight across Europe" must come to an end if the world is serious about tackling climate change.

Mr Cuffe told Newstalk: "I think the bigger picture is that we're in a climate emergency, we have to take action.

"One of the first things that we can do is fly less, and I think with the rise of teleworking in this COVID era, we've all learnt how to do that and how to do that successfully.

"And I think we simply cannot go on with €10 flights to halfway across Europe while the planet is burning."

Instead, Mr Cuffe suggested people use other infrastructure such as trains to travel from country to country, using his own experience to prove his point.

He said: "I work from Brussels a lot, and I hope to go to a conference in Vienna in May, and I will simply hop on a night train, get onto the train, get into a [cabin], fall asleep and wake up refreshed in Vienna.

"Alternatively, I could take a two-hour flight, and for a journey like that, it [the train] is a sensible alternative with a much lower carbon footprint."

Taking the train can cut carbon emissions by up to 50 per cent compared to a plane as it is designed to carry a large number of passengers, so the per capita emissions are significantly lower.

However, responding to Mr Cuffe's suggestion, Cityjet founder and chair Pat Byrne said trains were not suitable for all people with busy working lives.

He said: "Have you tried working on a train?"

"Have you tried working on the train going from London to Paris? London to Brussels?"

He added: "An overnight train is not exactly cheap, and there's also a decrease since 2010 in the number of overnight trains, so they're not that easy to avail of."
