'Chastening' - Painful Nottingham Forest verdict delivered after Brentford defeat

There was plenty to talk about in west London this weekend as Nottingham Forest suffered defeat to Brentford.

The loss massively dented the Reds' survival hopes, with a controversial second goal for the hosts dominating the chatter across the footballing world. Josh Dasilva's stoppage-time winner was called onside by VAR.

Below is a look at how the national media reported on the game from the press box at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Daily Telegraph

"If Nottingham Forest’s tour of the Premier League is going to last for just one season, the post-mortem from Steve Cooper will focus entirely on their poor away form.

"Forest have secured 24 of their 30 points at home and this was a 13th defeat of the campaign away from the City Ground, leaving the club deep in relegation trouble.

"Josh DaSilva’s contentious injury-time winner sentenced Cooper to another chastening experience in the capital and keeps Brentford’s hopes of European qualification faintly flickering."

"There can’t be many more painful ways to loosen your grip on Premier League status than the events that afflicted Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

"Leading with 10 minutes to go and looking comfortable, Forest must have felt cursed in the closing stages.

"Ivan Toney’s equalising free-kick crawled over the line in the 82nd minute after goalkeeper Keilor (sic) Navas played a one-two with the post."

The Guardian

"While Brentford’s fans goaded the opposition with chants of “you’re going down”, those in the away end who had travelled down from the Midlands stood in silent disbelief. For so long, Nottingham Forest had fought resolutely for what looked destined to be a win, and then a draw, that might have proven so important in their quest to maintain Premier League status.

"Then, clinging on with only 10 men on the pitch deep into injury time, it was all taken away. Fears once again turn to a future in the Championship, with defeat guaranteed to return Forest to the relegation zone after Everton and Leicester City’s game on Monday."

The Independent

"Late strikes from Ivan Toney and Josh Dasilva saw Brentford come from behind to condemn Nottingham Forest to another Premier League defeat on the road.

"Forest had led through birthday boy Danilo, who celebrated turning 22 with a goal in first-half stoppage-time.

"But Toney equalised with a free-kick eight minutes from time, taking his Premier League tally for the season to 20."

BBC Sport

"Nottingham Forest were stunned as a late Brentford fightback denied them precious points in their fight for Premier League survival.

"Brazilian midfielder Danilo marked his 22nd birthday by putting Forest ahead just before half-time, reacting quickest to steer home Morgan Gibbs-White's shot which deflected into his path.

"Brentford had plenty of the ball but created few clear chances until Ivan Toney's 82nd-minute free-kick went in off Forest keeper Keylor Navas."

Sky Sports

"Nottingham Forest's first away win since early January was cruelly taken away from them as Brentford scored twice in the final eight minutes to snatch a 2-1 comeback win.

"Steve Cooper's side were comfortably heading for three points after Danilo's strike on the stroke of half-time put them ahead - but Forest, and notably goalkeeper Keylor Navas, chucked away their lead.

"With under 10 minutes to go, Ivan Toney's free-kick went round the wall too easily and bounced off the post before squirming through Navas' body and into the bottom corner."
