Chase on for ex-Bristol Rovers striker, Manchester United prospect moves – League One transfers

Less than a week remains in the January transfer window and the market is hotting up ahead of Tuesday's deadline as Bristol Rovers and their League One rivals vie to put the finishing touches on their squads.

Joey Barton has made two additions so far, with Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah and Brentford goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe joining on loan until the end of the season, and the Gas manager wants to get more deals over the line before the window slams shut. Four players have departed, too, with Bobby Thomas' loan from Burnley cut short, while Trevor Clarke, Alfie Kilgour and Zain Westbrooke have also moved on.

The focus for Rovers in the final days of the window is incomings and the market is starting to move across the division as the deadline looms. Here is a roundup of the latest transfer headlines from across League One...

Bolton bid for ex-Gas striker

Victor Adeboyejo had something of a low-key loan spell with Bristol Rovers in 2019/20, but his career has blossomed since leaving Barnsley for Burton Albion.

The 25-year-old has scored 11 times for the Brewers this season, equating to more than a third of Dino Maamria's side's goals in League One, underlining his importance at the Pirelli Stadium.

The Nigerian's form has alerted several clubs eager for attacking reinforcements in this window, with Championship side Wigan Athletic reportedly interested.

But the most serious interest has come from League One promotion hopefuls Bolton Wanderers, who have tabled a bid for Adeboyejo this week, according to Football Insider, and the Trotters are considered strong favourites to complete a deal before next week's deadline.

Forest Green land Manchester United prospect

Everton hero Duncan Ferguson is set to replace sacked Ian Burchnall at Forest Green Rovers, and he is set to be followed to The New Lawn by Charlie Savage, the son of former Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage.

The Manchester United prospect made his first-team debut in the Champions League last season and the 19-year-old midfielder has been under the watchful eye of Erik ten Hag after taking part in their pre-season tour to Australia.

After playing regularly for United's under-21s side, the left-footed central midfielder has been deemed ready for regular senior football and Forest Green has been chosen as his destination.

FGR have been very busy this month, making a series of signings in hope of climbing off the bottom of the League One table, and Savage is the latest addition, with Pete O'Rourke reporting a deal has been completed.

Argyle battle Scottish pair for Premier League defender

League One leaders Plymouth Argyle are eager to sign Fulham defender Connor McAvoy on loan, but they face competition from Scottish Premiership clubs Aberdeen and Hearts.

Football Insider reports the trio are fighting it out to tie up a deal for the versatile defender, who predominantly plays as a centre-back.

He has caught the eye in 14 Premier League 2 outings this season, but he is yet to make his first-team debut at Craven Cottage. And with his contract due to expire at the end of the season, suitors hope to steal an early march on their rivals by landing him on a temporary deal this month.

With promotion a very real possibility for Steven Schumacher's side, Plymouth have been busy in the market this month, with Callum Wright, Ben Waine and Jay Matete among the headline additions.

Barnsley close in on Scottish striker

Michael Duff hopes to give Barnsley's promotion push a boost with the addition of Oli Shaw, according to The Scottish Sun.

The Tykes have reportedly struck an agreement with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock for the 24-year-old striker, formerly of Hibernian and Ross County.

The former Scotland under-21 international is out of favour at Rugby Park, but Barnsley boss Duff believes he can do a job at Oakwell and there is hope a deal can be sealed before Saturday's League One clash with Oxford United.

Shaw is yet to score in 12 Premiership appearances this season.

MK Dons sign a winger

MK Dons are another team caught up in the League One relegation battle and they, too, have been busy in the January window as they fight to keep their third-tier status.

Former Blackpool winger Sullay Kaikai is their latest signing, joining on a permanent deal from Wycombe Wanderers. The former Crystal Palace starlet played seven times for the Chairboys this season.

"He’s a player who has been high on our priority list during this transfer window and we’ve done a lot of work on him," head coach Mark Jackson said.

“He’s a player we believe can be a really good fit in what we want to do, in an out of possession and he will bring real attacking impetus to our game. I am looking forward to working with him and seeing him out on the pitch soon.”
