Charlie Patino among youngsters in Arsenal Dubai squad as Edu suffers another transfer blow

Charlie Patino is among the Arsenal youngsters who have travelled with the first team to Dubai for a mid-season training camp, football.london understands.

The Hale Ender grabbed headlines last month by scoring just 10 minutes after coming on for his senior debut in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Sunderland.

The 18-year-old is so highly rated that he is deemed to be the brightest talent to come out of a Gunners academy that has produced the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka in recent years, and has been training regularly with Mikel Arteta's first team this season.

And now he has been rewarded for his fine performances at London Colney with a place in Arsenal's travelling group to go to Dubai.

The Gunners flew out on Thursday morning to the UAE, with a squad including several other youngsters such as Taylor Foran and Mexican international Marcelo Flores.

After playing for Kevin Betsy's under-21 side in their Papa John's Trophy quarter-final defeat to Wigan on Tuesday, there were some concerns that Patino might not make the group to travel to Dubai.

However, he has departed with the rest of the senior side, and is set to be involved with first-team training for the rest of the season.

It's a positive end to what has been a mixed month for the Hale Ender.

He made his first start for Arsenal in their FA Cup third round defeat to Nottingham Forest, but struggled to make too much of an impact on the game.

With Ainsley Maitland-Niles having joined Roma on loan, Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey both picking up red cards and Mohamed Elneny still away with Egypt at AFCON, it seemed he could be in line for some more game time given that Albert Sambi Lokonga was the only orthodox senior central midfield option.

However, Arteta has been keen to ensure that Patino's development is handled correctly and chose to play Martin Odegaard in a deeper midfield role recently to avoid over-exposing the youngster.

It does seem that he will still be involved with first-team training for the remainder of the campaign, though.

football.london understands that a deal to sign Arthur on loan from Juventus is now unlikely to happen despite Edu's best efforts, while Lyon's Bruno Guimaraes is set to go to Newcastle.

The Gunners continue to be linked to Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz, and Youri Tielemans of Leicester, but if neither of the deals can be completed before transfer deadline day, then Patino will remain regularly involved with the first team group at London Colney.
