Charlie Bird thanks supporters for 'love and kindness' as ClimbWithCharlie passes €3million mark

Charlie Bird has expressed his appreciation to supporters after his ClimbWithCharlie fundraiser passed the €3 million mark.

The 72-year-old climbed Croagh Patrick last month in a bid to raise money for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House..

The veteran broadcaster was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease last year and set himself the goal of hiking to the top of Croagh Patrick despite having lost his voice.

The fundraiser has officially raised over €3 million but Charlie said they are "not finished yet."

He said on Twitter: "Everyone who supported climbwithcharlie, by your efforts, love and the kindness you have ALL made this amazing three million figure possible.

"Yes we have reached three million raised for two great charities. And not finished yet. Thanks for extending the hand of friendship."

Earlier this month, Charlie heartbreakingly revealed that his health has deteriorated, saying that he is now struggling to swallow and is eating is turning into a "nightmare".

He said online: "I am lucky I was able to climb Croagh Patrick. But with my voice gone I am now facing my biggest challenge yet.

"My swallow is getting worse. Sitting down now to eat is turning into a nightmare!

"But I can still extend the hand of friendship to everyone. Thanks for your support."
