Charlie Bird has thanked well-wishers as he celebrated his 73rd birthday over the weekend.
The former RTE news correspondent is bravely battling Motor Neurone Disease, and he celebrated his milestone birthday on Friday. Taking to Twitter, Charlie thanked the “amazing” pupils and staff at a primary school in Westport for sending him a special birthday card.
The lovely handmade card was decorated with children's handprints and featured the message: “Dear Charlie, Sending ‘the hand of friendship’ on your special day. Happy birthday! Love from all of us in Scoil Padraig.”

Charlie wrote in a Twitter post: “I want to thank everyone in Westport and scores of people from all over the Country for the Birthday Wishes. My next goal is Christmas and fingers crossed for Bruce in May."
Charlie also said that the hand of friendship is "helping me so much" and that he is "blown away" by all the support he has been shown. Meanwhile, on Staturday a delighted Charlie was also joined by a bird of prey as he celebrated his birthday.
He looked delighted as he said: “Got another birthday surprise today. A bird never flew on one wing.”
On 2 April, Charlie climbed Croagh Patrick in Mayo with the help of his family and friends, inspiring thousands of people do almost two hundred separate Climb with Charlie fundraisers across Ireland, the US, South Africa, Australia and Spain.
Last month at a special ceremony in Merrion Square in Dublin, Charlie presented two cheques totalling €3,376,000 to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta House, and he thanked the Irish public for their kindness in supporting him and the charities.
