Charles Tyrwhitt opening Bristol store as shirt brand ‘comes home’

Shirt brand Charles Tyrwhitt is set to open its first store in Bristol - the city where it was founded almost 40 years ago.

The clothing company was set up as a mail order business by entrepreneur Nicholas Wheeler, while he was studying at the University of Bristol.

Now headquartered in London with almost 50 retail branches stretching across the UK, the menswear label is set to occupy a 1,600 sq ft outlet at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway.

Charles Tyrwhitt will be based on the upper floor near to John Lewis in the out of town shopping centre, which is jointly owned by Intu, M&G Real Estate and JT Baylis, and will open there at the end of March.

Mr Wheeler said: “I started Charles Tyrwhitt in the autumn of 1986 from my room in Victoria Square in Clifton. I was studying Geography at Bristol University but found my little shirt venture rather more exciting than oxbow lakes and capital cities around the world. When I left Bristol the following year, I had no idea that it would take me 37 years to ‘come home’.

“So, I’m now super-excited to be opening our 46th store in Cribbs Mall. ‘Better late than never’, you might say. It also gives me the perfect excuse to come back and visit my favourite city.”

It comes as the Mall continues to expand its fashion offering, with brands such as Kurt Geiger, Carvela, Tommy Hilfiger, and Mango all arriving in recent months.

Scott Linard, portfolio director at M&G Real Estate, said: “Large regional retail centres in strategic, accessible locations such as Cribbs Mall continue to attract leading retail brands thanks to consistently strong footfall. Cribbs Mall is well known for its extensive fashion and clothing offer, and we are delighted to welcome such a recognisable brand in Charles Tyrwhitt.”
