Charity CEO vows to walk across Kerry in bare feet for Debra Ireland

The head of Debra Ireland is raising awareness of the painful effects of EB by walking across mountainous areas in his bare feet.

Debra Ireland represents people living with EB (epidermolysis bullosa) - a rare but serious illness affecting the skin. There are approximately 300 people living with the condition in Ireland, which causes skin to painfully blister at the slightest touch.

CEO Jimmy Fearon is taking part in Debra's annual Kerry challenge, which sees participants take to mountain paths and forest trails around the Dingle Penninsula. Jimmy will be joined by over 100 participants but unlike his counterparts, he'll be undertaking part of the journey without any footwear.

He said: "“By not wearing any shoes or socks during the Kerry Challenge, I hope to walk in the footsteps of people living with the disease. There is no cure for EB at present and in many cases people cannot walk because of sores on their feet."

The money raised will go towards vital supplies for families living with EB, including anti-bacterial silk socks and therapeutic cot sheets and pillow cases. The funds will also help facilitate the important services of Debra Ireland, such as counselling sessions and play therapy for people with the condition.

Although all sign ups for the Kerry Challenge have been filled, donations can still easily be made online. People who want to support the initiative can give money through IDonate.
