Chargers highlight: Alohi Gilman with the second interception of the day

Los Angeles has locked things down on their own half of the field.

The Browns reached Chargers territory on two of their three drives in the second half, working to LA’s 38 yard line with 2:16 left in the third quarter after a Cedric Tillman route on third down gained 12 yards against man coverage.

On the following play, Jameis Winston dropped back looking deep, trying to find a play to dig the Browns out of a 20-3 hole. He targeted Browns receiver Elijah Moore, who stopped running his route expecting the ball to go somewhere else on the play. Winston’s throw was wide anyhow, and Chargers safety Alohi Gilman was the only one near enough to the ball to make a play.

Gilman dove for the ball, getting his hands under it to make a clean interception. He scrambled back to his feet to add 16 yards on the return, moving the Chargers outside the shadow of their own end zone.

It was Gilman’s first interception of the season, the sixth Chargers defender to intercept a pass. Only three of those players – Gilman, Elijah Molden, and Kristian Fulton – are defensive backs.

The Chargers were not able to turn the ensuing drive into points, but are still up 20-3 at the end of the third quarter.
