Chappell Roan has revealed her statements condemning “creepy” fans were born out of a dark place caused by some truly terrifying fan interactions.
In a new profile for Rolling Stone, the Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess singer opened up about being harassed by fans and the moment she was kissed without consent.
One man was furious with the singer after not receiving an autograph at Seattle Airport and surprised her by meeting her at her next stop in LAX. The feeling of being followed is unsettling for any, let alone a young woman, and it hit her hard.
“I got home and dropped to my knees. I have a hard time crying now because of my meds [for bipolar disorder], but I sobbed and was screaming,” Roan recalled.
She also talked briefly about her stalker, who tracked the singer down and showed up at her New York hotel room as well as her parents’ house.
The final straw came when a fan grabbed her at a bar and kissed her without her consent. Not long after, she posted both her TikTok where she slammed “creepy” fan behaviour followed by her seven-slide Instagram Post saying she needed to “draw lines and set boundaries”.
In the interview, she admitted that her fame has come at a price.
“Part of me hopes I never have a hit again because then no one will ever expect anything from me again,” she said.
“I don’t want to be agoraphobic. That’s [how] most of my peers [feel]. Every fucking artist is on this page. Everyone is uncomfortable with fans. Some people just have more patience. I fucking don’t.”

Quite a few of Roan’s peers reached out to offer their support, including Charli xcx, Hayley Williams, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Troye Sivan, Noah Kahan and more.
Sabrina Carpenter, who has absolutely blown up with her first-ever number-one album Short n’ Sweet, told Roan the pair should meet up to let off some steam.
“We’re both going through something so fucking hard… she just feels like everything is flying, and she’s just barely hanging on,” Roan said.
“It was just good to know someone else feels that way.”
Perhaps the most unexpected celeb to reach out was Elton John, who has been a fan of Roan’s since he discovered “Pink Pony Club” in early 2023.
He actually called the singer via an unknown iCloud number, which she initially refused to answer because she thought a fan had discovered her iCloud.
“I was so mad and was about to hand my phone to my friend like, ‘Yo, let’s prank them’. I finally answered it one day and it was Elton Fucking John. I was telling him I was struggling a lot, and he said, ‘If you need to stop, say stop’,” she recalled.
Roan isn’t planning on leaving the industry — she’s been working on new music with her collaborator Dan Nigro — but can fans please learn to calm down? Let’s not push our favourite artists to walk away completely due to creepy behaviour!!!
