Chappell Roan Diagnosed With Severe Depression Following Meteoric Rise To Fame

Chappell Roan‘s rise to stardom has been incredibly meteoric. But with notoriety, acclaim, glitz and glamour, the self-titled Midwest Princess admits that her new-found worldwide fame has been incredibly difficult on her mental health.

In an interview with The Guardian, 26-year-old Chappell shared that she’d just been diagnosed with severe depression.

“I’m in therapy twice a week. I went to a psychiatrist last week because I was like, I don’t know what’s going on,” the “Pink Pony Club” singer explained.

“She diagnosed me with severe depression — which I didn’t think I had because I’m not actually sad. But I have every symptom of someone who’s severely depressed.”

Chappell explained that she’d been suffering from brain fog, poor focus and “a very lacklustre point of view”.

“I think it’s because my whole life has changed,” she told the publication.

“Everything that I really love to do now comes with baggage. If I want to go thrifting, I have to book security and prepare myself that this is not going to be normal. Going to the park, pilates, yoga — how do I do this in a safe way where I’m not going to be stalked or harassed?”

Over the past few months, Chappell has made it clear that she’s not down with any harassment or weird interactions with fans because of their parasocial relationship with her. As a result, she’s come under fire from some fans and critics for being ungrateful for her. However, she says that other famous pop girlies have shown her support and given her welcome advice.

“I was warned that it’s going to feel like going through puberty again — my body does feel different,” she told The Guardian.

“It’s holding tension in a very different way: I have all these new emotions and I’m really confused. It’s how it felt to be 12. I look at Lady Gaga and even Sabrina Carpenter and Lana Del Rey — when I see them going out in public, I can’t even imagine how much they’ve had to prepare for that.”

In August, Chappell took to TikTok and Instagram to set firm boundaries with fans. Thankfully, she told Entertainment Tonight that since speaking out, she’s felt that fans have been much more respectful towards her.

“I think people really listened,” she said.

“People have been so respectful. No one has been creepy to me or like harassed me. I feel very heard and it feels good.”

Chappell’s story is a good example of how we just never know what’s happening behind the scenes. Fame, notoriety and money might seem pretty damn neat, but it comes with a price.
