'Chaos' at Metrolink station as passengers told to leave service from Manchester

'Chaos' descended on a north Manchester tram stop after passengers were asked to leave a tram with a faulty door. Passengers spoke of a 'dreadful experience' on the Rochdale Metrolink line as dramatic scenes unfolded at Monsall station.

Images from the scene show a huge queue of passengers stood in the rain at around 6.25pm today (March 15) on the Rochdale-bound line. Several Metrolink staff appeared to be speaking to passengers in a bid to manage the queue.

An eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News: "Trams have turned to chaos this evening. Doors broke on a tram at Monsall and now 100 people are trying to cram on other already full trams."

Other passengers posted on Twitter to vent their frustration. @arnie_booth wrote: "@MCRMetrolink dreadful experience on the tram tonight. Tram breaks down at Monsall.

"There are five or six Metrolink staff at the station, who have no clue what they are doing and offering no help to the passengers on the platform. No idea what they were meant to be doing."

@malachitmorris added: "Monsall to Rochdale tram stuck at platform crammed full of people having them get off and on for the doors with ticket inspectors on the other side. How can you expect people to pay for such service? At least trains give you a refund."

A spokesperson for TfGM told the M.E.N. the issue had been caused by a 'door fault', but the issue was sorted 'quite quickly'. The spokesperson added: "Because there were so many people, the driver couldn't get down the tram to get it working again.

"They asked some people to get off and get the following trams behind. It caused about a 15 to 20 minute delay."
