There was motorway chaos on Tuesday (April 11) after a lorry crash caused a huge spillage with one person taken to hospital.
The M62 westbound was closed off by emergency services between J11 and J12 from around 10.45am, after the two lorries were involved in the major collision.
Pictures taken moments after the smash show the two lorries left badly damaged in the centre of the carriageway, with one of the vehicles forced over onto a grass verge. All four lanes were shut with paramedics and firefighters working at the scene.
The motorway was completely blocked off for around an hour, before one lane later reopened. Delays of around 90 minutes had formed due to the closure with over six miles of traffic caught on the live cameras, with further congestion also backing up onto the M60 anti-clockwise, the A572 and the A57.
It was confirmed by the North West Motorway Police that there were 'minor injuries' reported in the collision, with one casualty taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary.
The other three lanes remained closed throughout the day following a huge diesel spillage that caused the carriageway to be cleared and treated. Highways North West later announced it would be closed throughout the night.
The North West Ambulance Service confirmed a rapid response ambulance was sent to the scene where two patients were checked over with one taken to hospital.
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just before 11am this morning (Tuesday, April 11), one fire engine from Stretford fire station was called to reports of a road traffic collision involving two lorries on the M62 near junction 11 and 12. The crew arrived quickly at scene.
"Firefighters used dammit paste, a pop-up pool, a foam jet and a hose reel to make the vehicles and area safe. One person is in the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service."
A spokesperson for Cheshire Police added: "At 10.46am on Tuesday 11 April, police were called to reports of a collision on the M62 between junctions 11 and 12. The incident involved two HGVs. There were no reports of any serious injuries and no arrests were made.
"However, a large amount of diesel leaked onto the carriageway as a result of the incident and two lanes 1 and 2 have remained closed while clean-up work is undertaken. The incident is being managed by Highways."
