Adam Hills couldn't help but cheekily share thoughts on the famous faces avoiding the queues to see the Queen lie in state. The comedian was back at the helm of The Last Leg on Friday night after he made a decision not to go ahead with the planned programme last week.
The late-night comedy show had been pulled from Channel 4's schedule last Friday the day after Queen Elizabeth II's death was announced by Buckingham Palace. Releasing a statement at the time, Adam said on Twitter: "We’ve decided not to do an episode of @thelastleg tonight. It just doesn’t feel right."
But opening last night's edition of The Last Leg, Adam said he wanted to "offer condolences to anyone and everything affected by the death of the Queen." He then explained the decision to cancel the previous week’s instalment, saying the "night after the Queen’s death wasn’t the right time."
He did admit to still being unsure about how to approach the show but recognized that people "want cheering up" during the period of national mourning. "We’re going to try and do that tonight and celebrate the Queen’s long and happy reign in the right way," Adam declared on the programme.
During the show, Adam, his co-stars Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker, and guests Judi Love and David Harewood, discussed the queues snaking their way around the capital as hundreds of thousands of people spent hours waiting to pay their final respects to the Queen as she lied in state in Westminster Hall.
On Friday (September 16) people were quick to praise David Beckham after he was spotted queuing with members of the public to eventually file past the Queen's coffin. The former Manchester United and England footballer waited for nearly 13 hours before he was able to see the Queen's coffin.
And after joining the queue at 2am, the enormity and historic nature of what he was doing caught up with him as the emotional 47-year-old wiped tears during his moment with the late monarch.
The self-confessed royalist appeared to wipe away a tear as he approached the side of the coffin before taking a moment to pause. He then bowed before moving on with the rest of the crowds who had also paid their final respects.
Speaking on The Last Leg, Adam joked that the big story has now turned to who is in the queue. On David Beckham, David commented: "Fair play to him. He didn't skip the queue, he waited patiently." Alex, meanwhile, appeared envious of those fellow queues who got to "look at David Beckham's face for 12 hours." He added: "What a touch."
Adam went on to detail how Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid and comedian Tim Vine also joined the queue. But he added: "Theresa May used the VIP entrance as did Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby," to grumbles from his co-stars. "People are really angry about that one," Adam said. "There's apparently a sub-set of people out there who adore the royal family but don't like it when rich, privileged people get special treatment."
As laughs and applause rang out in the studio, Adam did clarify that ITV had told the programme Holly and Phillip were at Westminster Hall filming and were therefore allowed to use the press entrance. "There's no truth to the rumours they spun a wheel for viewers to join them," he savagely added after This Morning divided viewers earlier this month by adding energy bills to its Spin to Win competition.
Phillip, 60, was seen being filmed in Westminster Hall at around 10am on Friday in the absence of This Morning being on air. He opted to wear a smart black suit and tie for the visit, with the presenter sporting a sombre look on his face as he followed behind his co-star.
Holly, 41, appeared in front of her friend and colleague and at one point was seen looking back with tears filling her eyes. The mum-of-three looked elegant in a black dress with silver button detailing along the front. She tied her long blonde locks back with a black scrunchie and wore a matching black mask. ITV News' Mary Nightingale could also be seen behind them.
