Channel 4's Gemma Collins: Self-Harm and Me - Star opens up about her battle with mental health

Gemma Collins is set to share an intimate and personal account of her battles with mental health and self harm in a Channel 4 documentary that airs tonight (February 16).

The GC is known for her loud personality and lavish lifestyle, but the The Only Way Is Essex star has suffered with her mental health and self harm for two decades. These issues affect many, and the Channel 4 documentary will show Gemma talking in-depth about her problems with her nearest and dearest.

The official Channel 4 synopsis for the show is as follows: "With unrestricted access to Gemma's life, this uncensored portrait reveals a very different and surprising side to a celebrity whom the public think they know, but who has kept the details of these struggles private until now.

"Through moving conversations with her therapist, family and friends, Gemma relives the episodes in which she cut herself and tries to understand the events in her life that led her to self-harm, set against a backdrop of soaring self-harm rates among young people."

During the documentary, 41-year-old Gemma sits down with fiancé Rami to discuss the moment, around a decade ago, that he walked in and found Gemma self harming, which 'traumatised' him. Gemma says: "It was never about you, it was never about any of that. It was to do with me.

"Obviously I was going through something and the only way I could relieve the pressure was to cut myself. I never wanted to kill myself, that never went through my head. It was like a coping mechanism for me.

"So you know obviously when I had just got famous, and then people were coming up to me every five minutes... the pressure, the build up. I couldn't express myself properly.

"In the back of my mind because obviously we do want to go on to have a baby and stuff and I feel very happy with you, and very settled with you. And I think always in the back of my mind, you think 'Oh sh**, is it going to come back?"

Gemma and Rami first met when she was in TOWIE in 2011, but the pair ended their relationship after three years of being on-and-off in 2014. Just over a year ago, the couple rekindled their relationship, and are now engaged and planning to start a family.

The documentary also shows Gemma speaking frankly with support groups, her therapist, and her mum, Joan.
