Channel 4's Belfast Midwives delights viewers in first episode

The first episode of Belfast Midwives on Channel 4 enchanted viewers last night (January 3), who praised the "angels" for the role they play in bringing children into the world. The series is a five-part behind-the-scenes documentary about staff and families that go through the doors of the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital in Belfast.

Last night's episode followed three expecting couples, and documented natural births, stillbirths and C-sections. The emotional but warm show caused many on Twitter to demand better pay for midwives.

One user @shivvybaby87 said: "And now I'm crying someone give these midwives a pay rise, walking angels".

@abi_byrne_lait concurred, tweeting praise for the NHS: "Watched Belfast Midwives... first time watching anything like that since having my baby back in July. Lord it ‘hits different’ when you’ve known the feeling of your chalky, warm, confused and perfect baby being placed on your chest. Nothing like it. Protect the NHS at all costs."

Many praised the show for covering birthing difficulties, still births and grief, Rachel King (@Rachel19850249) said: "so relieved that you covered stillbirths in this program".

Another @AM_counselling tweeted: "Thank you for showing two types of baby loss in your first episode along with the happy deliveries . For bereaved parents it is always about balancing the grief of their loss with the joy of life - compassionate and trauma informed".

@Gillian_RD said: "Balling at Belfast Midwives. Amazing professionals. Brings back all the memories of having my wee ones at RVH."

And Beck Gardiner said: "Just watched it. What a sweet show - and how amazing our NHS midwives are."
