After shooting to fame on Love Island in 2018, Welsh doctor Alex George has gone on to become the Youth Mental Health Ambassador to the government and is currently co-presenting the Channel 4 show Naked Education. In the show, Alex works to teach teenagers about their bodies, including showing them naked people, and has hit back at the hate the show has received.
Viewers of the show were not happy that the teenagers were shown naked adults, including Conservative MPs, as reported by The Week magazine. Alex hit back at the criticism saying how important and how proud of the show he is. Among those who have appeared on the show is Hannah from Cardiff who was bullied about her height while at school and says she felt empowered by her naked photoshoot. Read the full story here.
In a lengthy statement on his Instagram, Alex, who lost his younger brother to suicide in 2020, said: "I'm so annoyed at myself. When I lost my brother to mental illness I promised myself I would stop at nothing to prevent other families living with empty seats at their dinner table.
"The reason I am annoyed at myself is because we created something incredible and life-changing with Naked Education, and I let the opinions of a minority of people (who almost certainly hadn't watched the show), distract from what a life-changing programme this is. What is wrong is having young people hurt themselves because of how they look, develop eating disorders and live a life of suffering.
"What is wrong, is being a doctor in A&E and healing the wounds of a young girl who has harmed themselves, again. Tears rolling behind my mask as I thought about the injustice of it all...I am proud of Naked Education. Thank you to all our brave and inspiring contributors. I think you should watch this series".
Naked Education next airs on Tuesday, April 18 at 8pm on Channel 4. You can keep up to date with the latest TV and showbiz news by signing up to the newsletter here.
