Comedy Big Boys will be returning to Channel 4 with a second series, it has been confirmed. The six-part first series was released in May this year and told the story of two young men who strike up an unlikely friendship at Brent University when they meet during freshers week in 2013.
Actor Dylan Llewellyn, best known for playing James on Channel 4's Derry Girls, starred as 19-year-old Jack who headed to university still overcome with grief after losing his dad. He then finds friendship with his flatmate Danny, a mature student and typical lads' lad hiding his own struggles with mental health, played by Jon Pointing.
The first series became a hit with viewers and also featured on Celebrity Gogglebox's Pride special episode. It has now been revealed Big Boys, which is based on an autobiographical stage show by Jack Rooke, will be returning to our screens with a second instalment.
Creator, writer and narrator of the series Jack said on the announcement: “The response to Big Boys series one has been so phenomenally kind, heartwarming and beyond anything any of us could have hoped for, the fact we got onto Gogglebox is probably the proudest moment of mine and my mum’s lives (she got over 100 likes on Facebook for it!).
“And so after a huge spitroast at Harvester, I decided I probably do have some more embarrassing stories about me and my mates to mine for comic material so get ready for an even more cringe second year at Brent University.”
“I’m so happy to confirm that Big Boys is returning," Charlie Perkins, head of comedy at Channel 4, said: “This is one of my first commissions as head of comedy at Channel 4 and it fits squarely into what I think makes the greatest comedy; so much heart blended with so much silliness. Jack is a very special person I can’t wait for what’s to come in series two.”
Taking to social media, Dylan Llewellyn shared a TikTok video of himself with co-star Jon Pointing on set filming the first series. The caption read: "SEASON 2 of Big Boys happening!!! #bigboys #channel4 @jackrooke @JonPointing."
Fans were also thrilled to hear the series would be making a return. Melanie tweeted: "Told everyone to watch this was obsessed! Sweet, funny, & poignant with that imitable & relatable element. So well deserved. Stoked for you all #BigBoys." Maggie Lewis added: "This makes me SO happy, congratulations @jackrooke and the whole team. Very much deserved #BigBoys."
Corey said: "This is amazing news! #BigBoys is one of the best shows of 2022, IMO, and I’m so happy to see @Channel4 keep it going! @jackrooke."
