Channel 4 axes 'rip off Apprentice' reality show after one series

Channel 4 has decided to axe its Make Me Minister programme after just one series, according to the Mirror. The show first aired on September 27, 2022 to see contestants compete for the job which has seen Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak fill the position in the last six months.

The show launched during the UK's political turmoil in the same month that saw two Prime Ministers, with the network believing the premise would rake in viewers. This didn't materialise however with the Mirror's Ian Hyland branding the show a 'political rip-off of The Apprentice - which many viewers agreed with.

Bosses are now said to have taken the decision to spike the show following dwindling viewing numbers. Speaking to The Sun, a source claimed: "There was a sense that after having three prime ministers in just five weeks, the country had had enough jostling to reach the top of the greasy pole.

"With a concept that had never been seen before, the programme was always something of a TV experiment which could have been a success or a flop. But trailblazing Channel 4 are never afraid to risk failure and try out a new idea."

Each week, 12 contestants were narrowed down via a series of challenges to decide who would come out on top to land the pivotal role. Contestants included social media sensation, Jackie Weaver, ex-footballer and sports agent Holly Morgan, hairdresser Caroline Thomson-Smith and student Alice Grant.

As they battled for the job, they were given guidance by 'spin doctor' Alastair Campbell and ex-Conservative minister, Baroness Warsi. Even former Prime Minster, Tony Blair, made a brief appearance on the programme.

Fans were left delighted by the debut of Jackie Weaver whose heated parish council meeting went viral during lockdown. At the now infamous Handforth Parish Council meeting, one member told Jackie: "You have no authority here, Jackie Weaver", and even poked fun herself at the iconic line telling the cameras: "I do have the authority here."

Viewers shared their joy on Twitter at seeing her again and one person wrote: "Been looking forward to Ch4's #MakeMePrimeMinister. The Apprentice meets politics. And it's got Jackie Weaver!"

Another added: "Well, I'd vote for Jackie Weaver. Job done! #MakeMePrimeMinister."
