Art lovers are invited to see how the experiences, memories and personal interests of an illustrator have gradually developed into a distinctive visual language during "Chang Of Art: 20 Years Of Artistic Journey", which is running at Moca Bangkok until Aug 30.
The exhibition brings together more than 80 works created over two decades by Kreetha Phromwo, aka Chang of Art. It traces the development of his practice, from doodles to works that bring his lines and ideas into a wider range of forms.
Over the past two decades, Kreetha has developed his work through observing people, reflecting on beliefs and history and engaging with music, travel and culture. These experiences appear through the lines, colours, characters and symbols found across different periods of his practice.
The exhibition presents six bodies of work, along with new works shown for the first time. Marking an important point of departure in his practice, "Doodle Surreal" features line drawings of numerous characters, forms and narratives.
"Big Eyes Surreal" presents portraits defined by enlarged eyes to explore looking, meeting another person's gaze and the effort to understand others; while "Auspicious Pop Art" reinterprets the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac through colour, form and helmet motifs.
The electric guitars in "Rock Never Dies" and the custom motorcycles in "Custom Street Lowrider Style Motorcycle" reveal another aspect of his practice.
He applies lines, colours and forms to functional objects while preserving their original use. He alters the surfaces and details of each piece to give it an individual character. These works connect art with music, travel, design and craftsmanship.
"Mr. MeeHey", meanwhile, is a lion sculpture that represents a traveller who chooses his own path through life.
