The gap between the word and the deed
Chanakya wrote in the Arthashastra that a man is known by his conduct, not his declarations. He was writing about ministers and kings, about court politics where a false ally could dismantle a kingdom from the inside. But the observation holds in every room you have ever sat in with someone you trusted. The person who says "I am always here for you" and is never there. The friend who announces her loyalty and then tells your secret to the one person you asked her not to tell. The colleague who calls you her closest confidante and undermines you in the meeting you are not in. Chanakya was not being cynical. He was being precise.
