Championship strugglers West Brom docked points for financial rule breach

  • West Bromwich Albion have received a two-point deduction from the English Football League (EFL) for breaching financial rules, specifically exceeding the permitted losses of £39 million over a three-year period.
  • This penalty leaves the Baggies just six points clear of the Championship relegation zone with only two crucial matches remaining in the season.
  • An independent Club Financial Review Panel (CFRP) confirmed the breach, leading to the immediate sanction, though West Brom stated the breach was less than £2 million, claiming it to be the smallest ever in EFL Championship and Premier League history.
  • West Brom expressed disagreement with the CFRP's findings, maintaining compliance with profitability and sustainability rules and attributing the issue to the EFL's Club Financial Reporting Unit (CFRU) changing its approach to community development expenditure.
  • The club is considering an appeal but affirmed their commitment to "settle this on the pitch”, with upcoming fixtures against promotion-chasing Ipswich and already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday.
